"Biosphere reserves are sites recognized by UNESCO under its Programme on Man and the Biosphere, MAB, which innovate and demonstrate approaches to conservation and sustainable development. Obviously, these sites are under the sovereign jurisdiction of States in which they are located, but they share their ideas and experiences at national, regional and international levels within the World Network of Biosphere. There are currently 553 sites spread over 107 countries. " Http://www.unesco.org/ Biosphere reserves are designed to answer one of the essential questions facing the world today: how to reconcile conservation of biodiversity , the search for economic and social development and maintaining associated cultural values?
Biosphere reserves should fulfill three complementary functions: a conservation function to protect genetic resources, species, ecosystems and landscapes, a development function, to promote economic development and sustainable human and logistical support function to support and encourage research, education, training and ongoing monitoring activities related to local, national and global issues of conservation and sustainable development.
The current growth trends and spatial distribution of population, economic globalization and the effects of the market economy in rural areas, erosion of cultural identity, the growing demand for energy and resources, access centralized information and inequality with respect to technological innovations force us to consider realistic prospects of the environment and the elements that constitute a serious overview of the prospects for the environment and development in the near future.
The world community needs real models while promoting the conservation and sustainable development. These examples are only valid if they take into account all the social, cultural, spiritual and economic needs of society, and are also based on sound science.
Biosphere reserves offer such models. Rather than becoming islands in a world increasingly threatened by the impact of human activities, can be the scene of reconciliation between humans and nature and allow the revaluation of accumulated knowledge to meet the needs of future generations. They can also help overcome the difficulties arising from the sectoral nature of our institutions. In sum, biosphere reserves are much more than just protected areas.
Thus, biosphere reserves are not only for people who live in them and their surroundings, an environment to develop fully in balance with the natural environment but also contribute to meeting the needs of society as set showing the way towards a more sustainable future. This idea is central to the concept of biosphere reserves in the XXI century.
