Biosphere Reserves Management Committee Presentation

The Biosphere Reserve La Campana-Peñuelas is a territory comprising 238,000 acres, according to the approval of the 21 st Session of the International Coordinating Council Men and Biosphere Program (MAB) of UNESCO. Includes land belonging to eleven communes, of which ten of them are in the Valparaiso Region and one in the Metropolitan Region.

Within the area there are three protected sites, Parque Nacional La Campana Lago Peñuelas National Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary Cerro El Roble. The communities within the territory are: Casablanca, Quilpué, Valparaíso, Villa Alemana, Viña del Mar, Llay Llay, Hijuelas, Limache, Olmué, Quillota, Valparaiso Region, and Til Til, in the Metropolitan Region.

History
Biosphere Reserve La Campana - Peñuelas was nominated by UNESCO on 15 February 1985 on the grounds of the Lago Peñuelas National Reserve and National Park La Campana. Considering the date of its establishment, the reserve of 17,000 hectares of land did not meet the criteria set out in the Statutory Framework of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, and no with the provisions of the Seville Strategy, documents both sanctioned during the General Conference of UNESCO, held in 1995, ie ten years after the creation of the Biosphere Reserve La Campana - Peñuelas.

The need to comply with these guidelines made CONAF Valparaíso Region UNESCO proposed the expansion of existing, as these consisted of Protected Areas of the State, the territory comprising the original boundaries of the Reserve only allowed fulfill the role of conservation, excluding the functions of promoting sustainable development and provide logistical support.
